Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Art, Growth, and Gratitude
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the creative milestones and personal moments that made 2024 so meaningful.
Artistic Highlights
The year began with an exciting exhibit at the Museum of Northern California Art in Chico. My piece, Flight of the Chickadee, was part of the Avian Art Exhibit and found a new home, which was such an encouraging start to the year.
In September, I participated in the first annual Santa Rosa Open Studios event, welcoming visitors into my creative space. In November, I hosted a successful papier-mâché workshop in my studio, where participants explored their creativity while building unique, heartfelt pieces. These moments of connection and shared artistry are always a highlight of my year.
Throughout 2024, my studio work continued to grow and evolve. My mixed-media bird and crow paintings remained at the heart of my practice, but I also ventured into creating papier-mâché sacred hearts, complete with flames—a new and deeply symbolic series. Additionally, I explored portraiture, drawing and painting my grandson during his last summer before college. These sessions were a gift, and now, as the year ends, I’m refining these pieces to capture his essence and spirit. I also painted from artists’ self-portraits. Some of these portaits are included in the current exhibit in Calistoga.
This year closes as it began—with my artwork included in a juried exhibit celebrating birds. I’m honored to have two larger paintings in Birds, Birds, & More Birds, an annual exhibit at the Museum of Northern California Art in Chico, CA. We’ll be delivering the pieces and taking the opportunity for a mini-vacation to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake County.
My work will be featured in What Can’t Be Spoken, the annual juried show at Gallery Route One in Pt. Reyes. I’m thrilled to have my art included alongside other thought-provoking works and I look forward to seeing the entire exhibit.
Currently, my work is also part of a wonderful group exhibit, Femina '24, showcasing the art of 15 women artists at Sofie Contemporary Arts in Calistoga. Jan and Scott Sofie’s dedication to supporting the arts in our community is truly inspiring, and I’m honored to be part of this show.
Life Beyond the Studio
On a personal note, this year brought new activities and hobbies into my life. I discovered a love for pickleball, playing a few days a week alongside my Aqua Aerobics classes. My husband and I even competed in the Wine Country Pickleball Senior Tournament! These moments of exercise, gamesmanship, and camaraderie have been invigorating for both body and mind.
I cherish the time spent with my two book groups, which bring friendships and the joy of reading into my life. My favorite read of the year was James by Percival Everett. It is a thought-provoking and beautifully written book.
This year gave us the chance to explore our beautiful state. From the serene Cavallo Point below the Golden Gate Bridge to the vibrant museums of San Francisco, and a rainy yet charming trip to Fort Bragg with a scenic return along the Pacific Highway. California’s beauty never ceases to inspire me.
Looking Ahead
As I prepare for 2025, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunities, connections, and creative moments that 2024 has brought. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work, attended exhibits, or participated in workshops—it means the world to me.
Wishing you all a joyful holiday season and a creative, fulfilling 2025!
