Artist Statement:
A Glimpse is one of my black bird paintings of crows. I completed this in late June 2021. I have taken pictures of crows in my backyard as well as in Yosemite. To see the crows better, I have studied images of crows in the public domain. I draw and paint from the images. What I like in drawing is the mark making in the process of recording what I see. I like the erasures and covering up along with confident direct marks that happens in the process. I aim for an accurate representation. But in A Glimpse, I liked the quick gesture of the crow. I like the crow’s gaze back as I look at the picture. It is both his glimpse and my glimpse, a quick catch of the eye.
Like most of us, I have had many experiences with this smart bird. I have fond memories of my son cawing back to crows as a toddler. Birds and nature have been in the background of my experience. For the time being they are in the forefront of my imagination and attention.
