Book Stack Series, Artist Statement

Books are emblematic. They represent ideas and feelings. They symbolize something I learned that became part of me. At a time when I was downsizing and tidying up, I thought I could keep a photograph or painting of significant books that I had read instead of a library of actual books. So I began painting and photographing favorite books in 2015. I stacked them so that I could paint the titles. The process became more than a record of books that influenced me or books I loved, it became a visual puzzle of perspective and colors and lettering. It was a pleasure to paint these books and feel their influence. To me they are a bit like a memoir or story of ideas I care about. Book Stack—Art Theory is a favorite in the series. It was a painting where I was in the flow of things. The painting and words and the arrangement just went together like a song. The original was purchased during Sonoma County Art Trails in 2015.
