Artist Statement:

This overpainted original photograph is part of my series of work inspired by Yosemite. I completed this in late July 2021. In this image of Half Dome seen from the parking lot in Curry Village I’m reminded of Chinese Landscape paintings where people are very small in relationship to nature. In the old ink paintings of the Chinese scholars our relationship with nature becomes a model for an ideal government and human relationships. Like most I feel awe when I see Half Dome. Although I wanted to see Half Dome by itself without the cars and people surrounding me, I now see the poetry of this picture. I painted into the trees to give them texture and detail.

In this work the photograph is printed on a wood panel, and I overpainted the image with acrylics. It is 24” x 16”.
