Blessed Unrest--Gallery Route One--Point Reyes Station

Artist Statement by Monica Bryant
This painting is part of my series of black bird paintings of crows. I completed this in October 2021. For art trails a fellow artist gave me a crow’s nest that was found in a tree taken down on her property. It was astounding to me to look at it. Crows are the subject matter of much of my art currently. It began mostly in response to the color black.

I have taken pictures of crows in my backyard as well as in Yosemite. To see the crows better, I have studied photos of crows in the public domain, as well as my own pictures and sketches. What I like in drawing is the mark making in the process of recording what I see. I like the erasures and covering up along with confident direct marks that happens in the process. Birds and nature have been in the background of my experience. For the time being they are in the forefront of my imagination and attention.

Uncertainty makes it difficult for us to predict what decisions to make and how to act. For most of us, the COVID-19 pandemic may be one of the first times we have had to deal with a long-term, volatile and seemingly uncontrollable situation. Has art been a respite or form of escape? Or do artists lead us down a path of better action and solutions? This exhibition surveys a group of Bay Area artists to consider the question “Where do we go from here?”

Hope is the Thing--Sofie Contemporary Arts in Calistoga

This painting was created in July of 2020. I have painted Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) numerous times since 2016. She gives me courage by her example. As a white artist, I researched ways to paint dark skin. It seems profound that you use the same colors to mix white skin tones, you just add more pigment. The intense red underpainting in the background shows through in the edges like an aura around her.
I admire her trust in something good and much bigger than our individual lives. The title is from a quote attributed to her; “I said to the Lord, I’m going to hold steady on to you, and I know you will see me through.”

Two works from my new series “The Thing With Feathers” will be in a bicoastal online exhibit called Wild Tangents curated by Ann Trinca from Perch Art House.

Monica Bryant—Artist Statement
Wild Tangents

My wild tangent is to look to nature for hope. In March and April of this year it was quiet outside. Road noises were nearly absent, and I didn’t hear planes and helicopters flying overhead. I noticed birdsongs. Although I feel concern for people losing their jobs and income, I welcomed the slower pace that emerged. I have a cabinet of the picture files my artist mother had collected over the years. I randomly chose to use her images of a cardinal and a goldfinch to add to my mixed media paintings. Emily Dickinson’s poem Hope is the thing with feathers powerfully expresses the persistence of beauty in our world. It seems so important to appreciate the free birds among us and to work a bit like them, scratch the ground, gather material for your nest, take a bath, fly, and sing your song. Like birds, live moment by moment and experience awe. It is hopeful to me the way nature has rebounded so quickly when the human stresses have been lessoned. This work is in my new series of mixed media paintings called, the thing with feathers.

My mixed media painting We Are Strong includes layers of paint, printed, brushed, dripped and layered on thick with tools. The Cardinal was printed and glued into the painting early on and then strengthened with cadmium red hue. The Cardinal has symbolized many things to people. I saw one three times this summer. I read that this might be a sign “that you might be doubting your strengths and the bright red bird is a reminder to check your confidence and move forward no matter the obstacles in your path.” I took that meaning as true for me and a reminder to all to know our power and strength. Hence the name We Are Strong.

Speak Up is a mixed media painting that includes a Goldfinch. This little bird sits on a purple cornflower or echinacea purpurea. The pattern above from an Indian block print suggests lines of music to me. To see a goldfinch, is a positive and optimistic sign. I feel we should speak up and sing our song.

With climate change and the extreme weather and fires we have experienced in California I can feel very pessimistic, but when I focus on my love for the earth and the life I have, I’m hopeful.

Hope is the thing with Feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
— Emily Dickinson

Artist Statement:

Guides created in June of 2020, was inspired by Black Lives Matter. I did not march during this tumultuous, stirring time out of caution for the corona virus. I am glad to create this art in support of the movement. I appreciate the chance to be included in an exhibit in response to what is happening. I have painted Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) numerous times since 2016. She gives me courage by her example. I admire the way she trusted God and followed the North Star to gain her freedom from slavery and then went back into danger to free other slaves. She is a model for young women today. She was a general in the Civil War. She was a strategic thinker. She founded a home for elderly African Americans.

100 Years of Freedom at Art Works Downtown, San Rafael, CA

The courage of women who lead us to freedom in the past inspires me. My work overpainting women such as Harriet Tubman and Louisa May Alcott is an act of connection with them. Their lives were so much more than the photographs that were left behind. I find looking closely and painting over and into the images is insightful. I connect to their great steps into independence and freedom. That courage is in men too, such as Abraham Lincoln. I also look for a broader connection to all life (such as crows, lemons, etc.) by modestly painting and photographing them. I agree wholeheartedly with the concept “freedom is an ongoing work in progress, producing magnificent beauty as well as grievous devastation.” It is good to look at the past 100 years.

Artist Statement:
I completed This is Your Land in 2018. I edited and painted over my 2017 painting which was titled America First?. It was a response to the news of the day and the extreme disruption in the American history narrative. I made silhouettes of women and signs and hats from the 2016 women’s march following the inauguration of President Trump. This is Your Land includes a photograph of our television screen, printed and mounted on canvas. It is an image of Netanyahu and Trump in 2017. I painted in other world leaders and their flags: Theresa May and the British flag, Shinsō Abe and the Japanese flag and Justin Trudeau and the Canadian flag. The leaders have been obscured and the silhouette of a US map is visible. There is a horizontal line mid painting that evokes the division in the United States today. The floating figure images surrounding our capital and our country are the good spirits that are working for us in the background.

Thank you, Santa Rosa Art Center, for this exhibit in honor of the 19th amendment!

Lemon Squares: Artwork by Monica Bryant
for CRIMINAL BAKING COMPANY in Sebastopol

I am delighted to have my art in the Criminal Bakery Shop! For Criminal Bakery I have printed my mixed media painting, Lemon Speak, on metal in squares. I call these prints Lemon Squares in honor of baking. They can be arranged as Lemon Speak or hung individually. Also included in the exhibit are larger mixed media works of lemons on panels that intensified the lemon images with both opaque paint and glazes of color.

Growing up in Kansas citrus trees were nearly nonexistent. The stories my depression era parents told of getting an orange in their Christmas stocking makes me grateful for the citrus trees I see in California. I have photographed orange trees many times over the years. Recently I began using the photos in mixed media paintings. Part of the reason was simply balm for my soul. I wanted to paint and celebrate beautiful earthly things. The lemon paintings began when my neighborhood friend started giving me lemons from her abundant tree.

This mixed media lemon work is of the dialogue between photographs I took of the lemons, the memory of painting them in watercolor, and a general feeling of happiness from lemons. I wanted to just see the lemons. It is magical to be painting lemons. I glued my photographs of lemons that I had printed on cotton and then I drew lemons from memory and from the photographs. I painted on the photograph with glazes of paint. I connected the ladder like blue lines that are part of a still life set up I have. The central lemon is balanced by the activity around it. The texture of the cotton wrinkles from my imperfect gluing became a trace of the uncertain process I followed. Adding a touch of violet in the unoccupied spaces made the lemons come alive.

Lemon Squares and my citrus series celebrates the visual beauty around us.

Painting into Photographs at Mo Ni Kai Art Studio

Thank you for your interest in my Painting into Photographs workshop!
Sunday Nov. 10th 11am to 3:30pm

Create mixed media art with your photographs! Bring printed photographs and I will provide the rest of the materials. For your prints I recommend making duplicates of three or more 8 x 10 photos so you can try different techniques on each one. Bring prints that you like. They can be landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, interiors, or of objects. I look forward to seeing the selection you make!

I often print on Epson Presentation Paper Matte.   https://epson.com/For-Home/Paper/Presentation/Presentation-Paper-Matte/m/S041062
If you can’t use that, card stock or heavier flyer paper will work. At many places you can print your photo on canvas or metal. Bring that if you can. I have not had success with glossy paper.

I will show you how I glaze over the image with subtle colorization and how I cover the photos  with thick and thin paint. I will show you how to mount your photograph on a panel. I will not be providing panels for you. You can get them at art supply stores or even bring something you already have like a cabinet drawer or a wooden box for mount. Mounting your painted photograph is optional. Here is a link to the list of supplies I use.

The class will be limited to six people due to studio space. If the weather is nice we can use the outdoor space adjacent to my studio.

The cost will be $100 each with a material fee of approximately $10. To sign up and pay in advance go here. You can email me to hold your space.

I look forward to seeing you!
